The next generation of farming in Illinois is coming soon.
Stateline Farm Beginnings plans to train family farmers in October to focus solely on sustainable agriculture. The program has helped launch 55 new organic farms in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin since 2005.
They expect to help Illinois reach its goal of 5,000 local farmers by 2020.
"It's economic development. It's better for the land. It's better for the local food economy. It's better for our health, and we want to be a part of that," says Tom Spaulding of Angelic Organics Learning Center.
Applicants for the program don't need to have any prior farming experience. The deadline for applications for the class is Oct. 1.
