Growth in the Rockford region's aviation hub is set to land in Rockford by 2016.

Plans to build a new hangar at Chicago Rockford International Airport are about to take off.

The facility will bring in at least 500 permanent jobs plus a possible 600 construction jobs.

The deal is with AAR, the nation's leading maintenance, repair and overhaul provider.

It will operate 24/7 and service a variety of commercial and military aircraft.

The city of Rockford and Winnebago County will fund half the expansion while state and federal money cover the rest.

"This major facility really points to the future with 21st century jobs, that are good paying jobs that create great neighborhoods and great communities," U.S. Senator, Dick Durbin said.

The expansion is hoping to utilize a new Rock Valley College aviation program set to start across the street next fall.

College President, Mike Mastrioanni, says he has faith the new hangar will give students a first class experience and hopefully a chance to score a job right in this region.

"They can come hopefully from our region, but some that may want to come here and stay here and work," Mastrioanni said.

The hanger project is expected to finish by spring 2016 and cost about $40 million.
