ROCKFORD (WREX) -
A green, grumpy ogre is coming to Rockford for some summer theatrics.
The Boys and Girls Club Youth Theatre Program will present "Shrek, the Musical" at 7 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, and again at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Nordloff Center, 118 N. Main Street. Tickets are $10.
This year's production will be directed by BGC theater alumnus Kara Sotakoun.
Sotakoun, a junior at the University of Illinois and an acting major, stepped up to the plate when she heard there was not a current summer theater program at the Boy sand Girls Club.
She previously participated in the Boys and Girls Club Summer Theatre productions of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and the "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."
All aspects of the BGC summer theater production are completed by elementary, middle and high school students, adn supplemented by college student volunteers.
The theater program was started through a grant written by then member Elliot Welsh and provided by In Youth We Trust. Under Welsh, the summer theater. And now, Welsh has had success in working on the hit show "Chicago Fire."
