A massive operation is underway on Rockford's west side with a plan to beautify the neighborhood.
Project Facelift brings together about a dozen Rockford organizations including Kids Around the World, CCS Youth Build, Engage, and a variety of churches.
Besides expanding a playground and picking up trash, the volunteers are painting homes, cleaning gutters and doing yard work.
"Whatever can be done to help a neighborhood function like a neighborhood functions, and that's where everybody pitches in and helps out with one another," says the Rev. Edward Copeland of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. "So ultimately, bottom line, we are building a sense of community."
Volunteers will be out working until Thursday, then there will be a neighborhood block party to celebrate the effort.
