The Rockford University football program earned its first awards for the upcoming 2014 season when it had a pair of student-athletes named preseason All-Americans by USA College Football. Senior linebacker Seth Swinehart (Rockford, Ill./East) garnered the top recognition for the Regents as he was selected a preseason First Team All-American. Senior tight end Dane Kirk (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle) was chosen as a preseason Third Team All-American. The USA College Football Preseason All-American Teams are selected by a national panel including head coaches, sports information directors, pro football scouts, USA Football News, The Sports Network and multiple football writers associations.
Seth Swinehart was one of the top linebackers in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference this past season and looks poised to put together another impressive campaign this upcoming season. Last season Swinehart earned 1st Team All-NACC honors and has now received All-NACC recognition in each of his three seasons as a Regent. Previously he was selected 2nd Team All-NACC in both 2011 and 2012. The Rockford native had his most impressive season thus far finishing in the top eight in five categories. The junior led the NACC in tackles (88), tied for the lead in assisted tackles (40), was second in solo tackles (48), finished sixth in tackles for loss (12.5) and was tied for eighth in sacks (4). In addition to his duties on defense, Swinehart also provided the Regents with a reliable running back in goal-line situations scoring 6 rushing touchdowns in 2013.
Dane Kirk also put together the best season of his collegiate career this past year and looks to be the focal point of the Rockford passing attack in 2014. For his efforts a year ago Kirk was selected 2nd Team All-NACC. Kirk had yet another breakout season and was one of Rockford's main threats in the passing game. He finished the year with a school record 63 receptions for 702 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. His 63 catches was second most in the conference while his 702 receiving yards were sixth best, and his 5 touchdown receptions placed him eighth in the NACC. Kirk finished the season ranked 47th in all of Division III averaging 6.3 receptions per game.
The Rockford University football team opens the 2014 season at home on Saturday, September 6th at 1:00 p.m. against Lawrence University.
