Quinn, Rauner poised for big-money race for Illinois governor

CHICAGO (WREX) - Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and Republican Bruce Rauner are poised for a big-money battle to become the next governor of Illinois.

The candidates released campaign finance reports today for the three-month period that ended June 30.

The finance reports show Quinn raised about $3.7 million in that time period and has about $12 million on hand in his campaign fund. Quinn benefited from having no serious challenger in the Democratic primary.

Quinn's campaign says more than two-thirds of his 1,357 donors gave $100 or less. But among his biggest contributors are labor unions and the Democratic Governors Association.

Rauner raised about $8 million but spent much more, leaving him about $3.5 million. The Winnetka businessman has already given more than $6 million to his own campaign.

Last month Rauner also received a $2.5 million donation from Chicago hedge fund CEO Ken Griffin. That's believed to be the largest single Illinois campaign contribution in the post-Watergate era.
