Community shows support for Rockford family after their 3-year old son drowns

Illinois State troopers are the first responders in an emergency.

This week they had to respond to a tragedy in their own work family.

3-year old Liam Vaughn drowned last week in a relative's pool on fathers day.

"He always loved his dad, he was always imitating him," Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Carl Heintz said.

His father, officer Mark Vaughn, is an Illinois State Trooper.

Master Sergeant Carl Heintz says the news shook his station, district 16, in Pecatonica.

"We are grieving here to support our brother mark," Heintz said.

That brotherhood, Heintz says, is typical of the force.

When word got out of the incident, stations from as far as Joliet, called to help in whatever way they could--volunteering officers to take the place of those who want to pay their respects to the young boy.

But they didn't stop there.

They wanted to support the family financially too.

So Illinois State Police started a fund for the family with a goal in mind of ten thousand dollars.

In just four days they surpassed that number, up to almost 24 thousand dollars.

Today marks the visitation of Liam, hundreds paying their respect to young boy.

Heintz says he will be hanging a batman balloon for Liam and his dad.

"He loves super hero's and his dad is one of them."

Funeral services are being held tomorrow at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Rockford.
