Kids learn dog skills at K9 camp

BELVIDERE (WREX) - Kids and pets typically go hand in hand and that's the idea behind Belvidere's Kids and K9s Camp.

A group of 13 kids, between 6th and 8th grade, get to work with dogs at the camp every day.

The volunteer dogs help the campers learn how to train dogs, play fun games with them and gain an appreciation for the animal. Some campers can take the skills with them to train their own dog and more.

"We just kind of want to broaden their horizons about dogs that they're not just pets, but there's a lot of activities that they can do with them, and jobs that they can get that would involve dogs," said Marilyn Johnson,

Training Coordinator at Meyer's Tails Up Farms

Applications for next years kids and k9s camp come out next April.
