Retailer helping customers donate to Red Cross disaster relief effort

An Illinois retailer is working with the Midwest River Region of the American Red Cross to help collect donations for thousands of storm victims after this week's storms.

Red Cross officials said Casey’s General Stores have set up a donation program at all of their Illinois and Iowa stores.  A Casey's employee at its Rockton location said customers can add any donation amount to their bill at checkout.

“We are so touched by the generosity of our partners at Casey’s General Stores,” said Betsy Pratt, Regional Chief Executive Officer of the Midwest River Region. “Every dollar is needed, as thousands of people in the Midwest are struggling to recover.”

Pratt said the Red Cross is helping residents hit by tornadoes, high winds and flooding with shelter, food, water and supplies.  She said the agency has deployed two emergency response vehicles to distribute food and relief supplies and more are on alert.

Dozens of Red Cross workers remain on scene in hard hit northeast Nebraska towns, like Pilger, to help those affected by Monday’s tornadoes. An emergency shelter was opened to help residents impacted by the storm by offering a safe place to stay, meals and minor first aid.
Pratt said volunteers from the Northwest Iowa Area provided assistance to more than 10 people displaced in a hotel fire in Storm Lake Monday night. This is in addition to overnight sheltering for more than 100 people in Cherokee, Rock Rapids and Rock Valley due to flooding in the area from Monday’s severe weather.

"The Red Cross is able to respond quickly when emergencies like this happen with the help of corporations like Casey’s General Stores," said Pratt.  "In the Midwest River Region we responded to help six families in Muscatine County after storms came through the area this week. We will also be sending three volunteers from the American Red Cross of the Tri-States to Platteville, WI today to help individuals who were affected due to storms that hit in that area."

If going to a Casey's to make a gift is not feasible, Pratt said donors could visit or  call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
