Prairie Hill School District bus driver accused of assaulting young girls

ROCKFORD (WREX) - A Prairie Hill School District bus driver has been accused of sexually assaulting two five-year-old girls.

Sixty-eight-year-old Peter Sanchez was indicted by a grand jury on five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for the alleged inappropriate conduct with two five-year-old girls while working as a bus driver between mid-April and mid-May. Authorities believe the two girls are the only victims, but the investigation is ongoing.

"Our hope is the public will see the press conference, see the picture of Mr. Sanchez, should there be any other victims, we ask that people come forward and report that information to the Sheriff's Department," Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato said.

Prairie Hill School District Superintendent Ted Rehl said the parents of the girls contacted the district the day after Memorial Day.

Sanchez was arrested in Puerto Rico, and was awaiting an extradition hearing before facing charges in Winnebago County.

The charges carry a sentence of three to seven years in prison on each count or probation if he is convicted.
