Community gets another opportunity to weigh in on facilities plan

Posted:
Changes are coming to rockford schools whether residents like it or not. But the group in charge of getting your feedback on those changes is heading to work.

"For me to come to a session, I have to take off work."

As district leaders accumulate feedback from each elementary and early education center, four of those sessions are being held after five in the evening.

One parent we spoke to Tuesday says that's not enough.

"They're not going to get anybody to show up if they have it at 2:30, 3:00 where if they have it at 5 or 6 when people are off work," said Walker parent Joe Verni-Lau.

Committee Chair Jude Makulec says four night sessions will work. She also takes into account most committee members volunteer to speak at the schools on their own time.

"We don't want to delay the process over a period of months, we really want to get some feedback right away and continue on maybe improving one of the plans but to continue to work," said Makulec.

Times won't change, though, committee members want everyone to get a chance to ask questions and voice concerns.

"But I think the risk of saying, hey you have to come to a meeting to weigh in, I have some concerns that that's a greater risk," said district superintendent Dr. Ehren Jarrett.

The solution is open, anonymous posting on the district's website allowing *everyone to offer feedback.

It's a mend, committee members supported.

"They're going to support people coming and putting their input on where in the next 24 hours we should see something on the RPS205 website," said Makulec.
