NIU's Anderson wins MAC West Pitcher of the Week

Following his 11 strikeout complete game performance that helped the NIU Huskies to a 6-5 victory at Kent State May 3, senior Eli Anderson (Glenview, Illinois/New Trier) earned Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week honors. It is his first award of the season and the fourth in the last two seasons.

Anderson improved to 3-5 on the year with the victory with his second complete game of the season and the eighth of his career. His second strikeouts were tied for second most against the Golden Flashes this season as he accounted for 11 in the contest. KSU has only struck out 105 times this season.

Most impressively, Anderson only walked one batter in the contest and didn’t do so until the bottom of the ninth inning. Of his career-high 142 pitches thrown in the contest, 95 of them were for strike as 67 percent of his pitches crossed the plate, also setting a new career-high in strikes thrown.

The outing by the senior of Glenview improved his career record against 2012 College World Series participant to 2-0 with two complete games, a shutout, 19 strikeouts and four walks with an ERA of 1.00.

Though he allowed five runs in his outing, only two of those runs were earned in the contest. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Huskies recorded outs at third base and at home plate on an 8-4-2 putout at home as NIU sealed the victory over Kent State.

Following finals this week, Northern Illinois will host Akron at Ralph McKinzie Field for a three-game set, starting May 9. First pitch is set for 3:05 p.m. The Huskies will host Senior Day on Sunday and will host a blackout weekend as part of the festivities.
