Nelson Elementary teacher works through struggles in classroom to earn Teacher of the Week

ROCKFORD (WREX) - A teacher's job isn't always apples and an A+.  That holds true for Nelson Elementary's Miss Lisa Holliday.

"I think I'll look back on this year as the year that I grew so much as a teacher, and the year that I was able to take a really rough class and make it something really special," Holliday says.

But in her fourth year in the classroom, she's feeling accomplished after earning the Teacher of the Week Award.

"The families and homes that kids from Nelson come from are pretty challenging, so it's a daily battle with issues that kids come to school with, and trying to work through those before learning can actually take place," Miss Holliday says.

As a third grade teacher at Nelson Elementary School in Rockford, she's following in the footsteps of her mother, who was also a teacher.

"I grew up at the old Rockford teacher's center laminating and cutting and making dye cuts and fun stuff like that, so I grew up in education and I've always loved school," Holliday says.

After beginning her career as a teacher for the hearing impaired, she's embraced her role at Nelson. She uses fun games and phrases to get the kids excited to learn. It helps her teach respect and overall good behavior, and despite any struggles a class may have, Holliday couldn't imagine life without teaching.

Holliday says, "There of course are days that are discouraging, but then it seems like the next day can be the complete opposite, then you're just back on your feet again, and up for anything."
