After a year of hard work by students, staff, family, and friends, Thurgood Marshall Elementary is unveiling a new mural.
The 2,200-tile Oceania mosaic is located in the school's foyer. Nearly 1,000 people donated tiles to the project, which integrates art and science.
Eighth-grader Lily Johnson said, "It was interesting to see how they had put it together because I wasn't really sure how it would look at first, but it's great to look at it and just sit there and go, 'Oh look! I made that!'"
The project was made possible by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.
