The United States is decrying incidents of religious intolerance in Ukraine, including leaflets that demand Jews in the eastern part of the nation identify themselves.
Secretary of State John Kerry described the leaflets as "grotesque and beyond unacceptable," denouncing apparent threats made to members of the Russian Orthodox Church by members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Kerry, who is in Geneva for talks on Ukraine, said that behavior cannot be tolerated.
The leaflets recall Nazi-era persecution of Jews. U.S. officials say the leaflets have recently shown up in Donetsk in the midst of pro- and anti-Russian protests.
The State Department said it was investigating who was behind the leaflets and that it takes the threat seriously, regardless of who is responsible.
