The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports the state's unemployment rate dropped to 8.4 percent in March, the lowest rate since January 2009.
March's unemployment rate was an improvement over February's rate of 8.7 percent. However, IDES also reported new-job creation was still down by about 3,200 jobs for the month, a less than one percent drop. The leisure and hospitality sector added the most jobs in March with 4,300.
The state has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Federal reports show the national rate at 6.7 percent.
