The Illinois Treasurer's Office's I-Cash program has returned nearly $30 million in unclaimed property to 15,000 Illinoisans in the first quarter of 2014.
The office's Unclaimed Property Division has over $1.8 billion in unclaimed cash. The money comes from inactive bank accounts, utility deposits, insurance policies, paychecks, and other sources given to the treasurer if their owners cannot be immediately found. Items left in safe deposit boxes for at least five years are also in the division's care.
Last year, the I-Cash program returned $139 million in money and other assets to their rightful owners, up 69 percent from 2012.
Potential claimants can search for any unclaimed property at www.treasurer.il.gov.
