Tuesday, April 15 is the deadline to file your taxes, but if you're owed a refund, you may not have to worry if you haven't yet started your return.
While the Internal Revenue Service likes to keep it quiet, penalties for filing late federal tax returns only apply to those who owe money, since the penalty is a percentage of the amount you owe. If you owe nothing, a percentage of that is still nothing.
However, taxpayers owed a refund are still strongly encouraged to file on time in order to receive that refund as quickly as possible. Also, if you have unpaid taxes, those late fees can add up fast.
According to the IRS, about two-thirds of tax filers get refunds.
