IDOT puts weight restrictions on 3 Rockford bridges

ROCKFORD (WREX) -

Three Rockford bridges now have weight limits after a route structure inspection by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

IDOT says bridges on Alpine and North 3rd Street have devolved to a point where restrictions are needed to reduce accelerated deterioration. The following weight restrictions are now in effect:

  • Alpine Road over the north branch of Keith Creek, north of East State
    • Single Unit Vehicles:              18 tons
    • Combinations 3 or 4 Axles:    23 tons
    • 5 or More Axles:                     29 tons
  • Alpine Road over the south branch of Keith Creek, south of East State
    • Single Unit Vehicles:              14 tons
    • Combinations 3 or 4 Axles:    19 tons
    • 5 or More Axles:                     23 tons
  • North 3rd Street over the southbound ramp to North 6th Street
    • Single Unit Vehicles:              20 tons
    • Combinations 3 or 4 Axles:    24 tons
    • 5 or More Axles:                     26 tons

Signs both at and in advance of the structures will be posted next week. Both IDOT and Winnebago County oversized and overweight vehicle permitting offices are aware of the postings and will be detouring truck traffic elsewhere.

The Department of Public Works is currently strategizing the replacement or repair of the bridges and IDOT will continue inspecting their structures.
