Sailor, civilian suspect dead in shooting at Virginia naval base

A spokeswoman for Naval Station Norfolk reported a sailor and a civilian suspect were fatally shot aboard a missile destroyer docked at the base.

Terri Davis said the lone suspect in the sailor's fatal shooting was killed by security on the vessel. The civilian had permission to be on the base, but Davis couldn't say whether or not he was permitted to be on the destroyer, the USS Mahan. She said the Navy would release both men's names after their families were notified.

The base went on lockdown for a brief time, but Davis said operations were back to normal Tuesday morning. She did not describe any other circumstances surrounding the shooting.
