Just five months after organizers announced they would be putting the Rockford Marathon on hiatus due to a lack of sponsor support, the race is returning, but on a smaller scale.
Organizers of the annual event announced Tuesday that the Rockford Half Marathon and 10K Run will be held on Sunday, May 25. The races will be held along the Rock River, and no full 26.2-mile marathon will be held this year.
Last year, nearly 80 percent of the event's 1,200 runners took part in the half marathon and 10K, which factored into organizers' decision to scale back the race.
Registration for the 2014 races is open at www.rockfordhalfmarathon.com. The cost is $55 for the half marathon and $35 for the 10K through April 20. The races will start at 7:00 a.m. at Main and Chestnut downtown.
A portion of the proceeds of the event will go to Northern Illinois Food Bank.
