Blackhawks agree to terms with van Riemsdyk

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have agreed to terms with free agent defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk on a two-year contract, which begins at the start of the 2014-15 season.

Van Riemsdyk, 22, tallied 23 points (4g, 19a) in 26 games this season at the University of New Hampshire. Despite playing in only 26 contests, he ranked fifth on the team in points and sixth in assists. Van Riemsdyk posted a season-high three points (3a) on Jan. 3 vs. Nebraska-Omaha and registered two season-best five-game point streaks from Nov. 8-16 (2g, 5a) and Nov. 23-Dec.6 (1g, 5a).

The Middletown, N.J., native recorded 75 points (16g, 59a) in 102 career games over three seasons with the Wildcats from 2011 to 2014. He was named a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) First-Team All-American and Hockey East First-Team All-Star following the 2012-13 season and to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team following the 2011-12 campaign.

Prior to his collegiate career, van Riemsdyk played two seasons with the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs of the Eastern Junior Hockey League from 2009 to 2011, tallying 73 points (24g, 49a) in 70 games. He helped lead the Jr. Monarchs to the EJHL title in each of his two seasons with the club.

Van Riemsdyk is the younger brother of Toronto Maple Leafs forward and United States Olympic team member James van Riemsdyk.
