A 30-year-old Rockford man was sentenced to 86 years in prison for the 2009 shooting death of his mother and armed robbery.

Franklin T. Byrd was found guilty but mentally ill in October 2013 of first-degree murder and armed robbery charges. He shot his mother, 42-year-old Leslie Byrd a dozen times and also cut her abdomen with a knife after she passed. Police say Byrd was found with his mother's jewelry on his person and about $30 he admitted to taking after killing her.

Byrd was sentenced during a Monday morning hearing. He was sentenced to 55 years for first-degree murder that must be served in full. He was also sentenced to 31 years for armed robbery that must be served at 85 percent, consecutive to the first-degree murder charge.
