A 30-year-old Rockford man found guilty but mentally ill in the 2009 shooting death of his mother will wait until Monday for his sentencing.
A sentencing hearing for Franklin T. Byrd was scheduled for Friday, but Judge John Lowry said he needed more time to look into mandatory sentencing on an armed robbery charge against Byrd.
Byrd was found guilty but mentally ill on multiple first-degree murder charges in October 2013. Police say he killed his mother, 42-year-old Leslie Byrd, at their home by shooting her a dozen times. They say Leslie Byrd's abdomen was also cut with a knife after she was already dead.
The public defender representing Byrd said Byrd's paranoid mind was convinced his mother was trying to harm him.
