Illinois unemployment rate stays steady at 8.7 percent


Data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security shows the state's unemployment rate held steady in February at 8.7 percent, unchanged from January.

The national unemployment rate followed suit, staying at 6.7 percent in February. Illinois has one of the highest rates in the nation.

IDES reported Illinois added a net 6,400 jobs last month, an improvement from when the state lost jobs the month before. The professional and business sectors added 10,400 jobs with leisure and hospitality sectors adding 4,000 more. However, firms in trade, transportation, and utilities cut 6,100 jobs.

The manufacturing sector stayed on a decline, marking a net loss of 1,100 jobs.
