Northern Illinois University students have a golden opportunity with a new-age focus on manufacturing headed to the area.
Federal and state grants as well as private funding will help pay for a $320 million initiative creating a Design Lab in Chicago. Researchers there will produce digital manufacturing technology that can be used in the real world. NIU administrators hope students can learn about this technology in their classrooms. The college also plans on offering training to current manufacturing employees.
"We've had wonderful relationship with Rockford in the past. We've worked with more then 100 companies in Rockford so our first choice of partnerships will be in Rockford." -says NIU College of Engineering Dean Promod Vohra.
NIU hopes to see the Design Lab project start up in the next few months.
