Northern Illinois University marks 6th anniversary of shootings

Northern Illinois University will remember the five students slain February 14, 2008, with a bell-ringing ceremony Friday afternoon.

Five bells will be rung at 3:06 p.m. in honor of 20-year-old Gayle Dubowski, 20-year-old Catalina Garcia, 32-year-old Julianna Gehant, 19-year-old Ryanne Mace, and 20-year-old Daniel Parmenter. The students were killed when a former student opened fire on a classroom in Cole Hall. Over a dozen others were injured. The gunman died as well.

Friday's ceremony will also include the announcement of memorial scholarship recipients. The $4,000 "Forward, Together Forward" scholarships will be given to Kaitlyn King of Sycamore, Juan Molina Hernandez of Aurora, Lauren Noonan of Naperville, Joseph Palmer of Rolling Meadows, and Christian Villalobos of Chicago.

The scholarship recipients will be honored during a private ceremony next month.
