Illinois lawmaker wants ban on smoking in cars with kids
SPRINGFIELD (WREX) -
Chicago Democratic Senator Ira Silverstein has introduced legislation that would make it illegal to light up in a vehicle if a child is present.
Silverstein hopes the potential law will protect kids from secondhand smoke. If the measure is passed, anyone violating it would face a $100 fine. However, police would not be able to pull drivers over for just a smoking violation.
Six other states currently have similar bans. A resolution passed in Illinois last year encouraged people against the practice, but didn't ban it outright.
