UPDATE: Witness says gunman in N.M. school shooting a student

New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez said the gunman was stopped when a teacher went up to him and asked him to put down his gun.

State police said the suspect was a 12-year-old seventh grader.

Hospital officials have updated the male victim's age from 14 to 11 years old.


A student witness to the shooting says the gunman was a male student she believed was being bullied. Odiee Carranza, and eighth grader at the school, says the shooting occurred in the gym and the gunman shot a 14-year-old boy twice in the face and a girl in the arm. She said he then fired a shot into the air before dropping the gun and being grabbed by a teacher.


At least two children are hospitalized, both having been transferred to University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. A 14-year-old boy, the reported target of the shooting, is in critical condition, and a 13-year-old girl is in serious condition.

A student's mother told the Albuquerque Journal a male student was shot in the face.


A Texas hospital says a 14-year-old boy who is currently in critical condition was likely the target of Tuesday morning's shooting. He was transferred to the Lubbock hospital for treatment Tuesday. The hospital says a 13-year-old girl may also be en route in critical condition.

The shooting occurred at 8:11 a.m. at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico. Police have a suspect in custody.

Officials at Eastern New Mexico Regional Medical said two students were taken there after the shooting, but it's unclear if either of those students were taken to Lubbock or if the boy is a third victim.


A Roswell hospital is reporting at least two children are being treated for injuries.

Police are reporting a shooting at a Roswell, New Mexico middle school.

Officials have not released any information on injuries, but say the suspected shooter is in custody. Berrendo Middle School is on lockdown. Parents were directed to a nearby mall to pick up their children.
