It's never too early to learn how to read and write well. That's Ms. Julia Johnson's philosophy at Maud E. Johnson Elementary School in Rockford. I explored Johnson's world of creative writing, as she was awarded our Teacher of the Week honor.
"I love children," Julia Johnson, a 2nd grade teacher at Maude E. Johnson Elementary, says. "Children bring a new experience everyday to you, then you get to bring your experience and influencing them and making them the best they can be."
She says her goal is to get her kids writing early. Her classroom is set up perfectly for it. The creative writing area gives the kids a chance to express their feelings and to talk about what they enjoy. From projects about themselves and even an animal report, the kids learn something new and exciting as they explore the world through Johnson's classroom.
"You can tell on their faces why they enjoy being here," Johnson says. "They enjoy being here and I want that for them."
Those faces keep Johnson coming back everyday, excited to teach.
