After marking a record number of heroin deaths in 2013, DuPage County is investing $100,000 toward prevention efforts.
Last year the county west of Chicago recorded 45 heroin-related deaths and the coroner says that number could rise by one or two, depending on the results of pending toxicology tests. The county saw 38 heroin deaths in 2012.
Of the deaths in 2013, 39 were male, with the oldest victim 64 years old and the youngest 15.
The $100,000 will pay for a heroin prevention campaign including education for school students.
