Guilford assistant swim coach passes away

Chris Gyorkos, who was an assistant swim coach at Guilford High School, passed away Monday evening, Dec. 30. Mr. Gyorkos was hired by the Rockford Public Schools in November 2013. Before that, he volunteered with the girls team at Guilford for three seasons. He was in his third season helping the boys team.

Bill Miner, Guilford's head swim coach, informed the team of Mr. Gyorkos' death Tuesday, Dec. 31, before a morning practice. District grief counselors will be with the team at a Thursday noon practice. They will also be at Guilford when students return to school Monday, Jan. 6.

Miner said Gyorkos made a huge contribution to the team. He coached proper stroke technique, but he was also a great motivator. "It didn't matter how good swimmers were, he was always in their corner, trying to help them get better," Miner said. "He was everybody's coach. Everyone on our team meant something to him."

Miner told the swimmers they had no idea how many conversations he and Gyorkos had about them. "All of you mattered," he told the swimmers.
