A former gynecologist from Chicago was sentenced to 18 years in prison Tuesday for raping a pregnant patient.
Bruce Sylvester Smith was charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault for the 2002 attack. His 31-year-old victim was eight months pregnant at the time and receiving prenatal care from Smith.
Smith was not arrested for the crime until 2010. Prosecutors admitted "mistakes were made" because a sample of Smith's DNA was never taken after the victim reported the attack. Smith testified the victim initiated the contact during an exam and the sex was consensual.
Several other women came forward to accuse Smith of sexual misconduct, resulting in the suspension of his medical license in 2009. The license was revoked in 2011 for unrelated reasons.
Smith was never charged in any other cases.
