Homeless people search for warmth during cold spell

Posted:
ROCKFORD (WREX) -

A growing number of people in the Rockford area who don't have a roof over their head this winter are turning to local charities for help.

The Rockford Rescue Mission has seen a spike of people at its shelters. Many homeless people who live on the streets during the warmer months can't do that in the freezing conditions.

While the Mission is used to and prepares for the influx of people this time of year, donations are always needed.

"We definitely want people to think about water proof. You know a lot of times they'll bring in knitted things which are great to keep you warm but when they get wet it's hard out in the elements so waterproof gloves, waterproof boots those types of things," said Chris Eldridge, Rockford Rescue  Mission Director of Development.

Below is a list of the warming centers in the Rockford area.
