Freeport leaders appoint new fire chief

City of Freeport leaders appoint the man they want to keep them safe when it comes to firefighting and prevention.

Elk Grove Village is a Chicago suburb just east of Schaumburg.  Elk Grove is where Freeport's new fire chief comes from.

"I hear by appoint Scott Miller as fire chief for the City of Freeport. This appointment shall be effective December 17th, 2013."

Aldermen approved that appointment unanimously.

Miller, formerly interim and Deputy Chief of the Elk Grove Village Fire Department was one of more than 60 applicants.  The city picked 8 of those candidates for interviews.

Miller takes over for 26-year-fire veteran Kevin Countryman, who left in July for a career in education with Rock Valley College.

"After the mayor had some lengthy discussion with Scott Miller, he believes that Scott will be the best fire chief for the City of Freeport and I agree wholeheartedly with Mayor Gitz," said Interim Chief Jim Blackbourn.

Elk Grove is a village with around 36,000 people. Larger than Freeport.

"How does Freeport compare to the one that you came from," asked Alderman Michael Koester.

"As far as the residential demographics, it's somewhat similar but it certainly gets busy during the day with all of the business that's being conducted," said Miller.

Miller will be in charge of three stations and around 50 personnel. He was in charge of four fire stations and around 100 personnel in Elk Grove Village.
