Blackhawks to donate $200K to tornado relief efforts

Posted:
CHICAGO (WREX) -
In an effort to aid those affected by the recent tornado in and around Washington, Ill., Chicago Blackhawks Charities will donate $200,000 to the ‘Washington Tornado Relief Fund', which goes directly to those in the community of Washington. In addition, the Blackhawks will sponsor a community pre-Thanksgiving fellowship luncheon in Washington on Wednesday, Nov. 27. The luncheon will serve those affected by the devastating storms last weekend, their family and friends who are helping them, all first -responders, as well as the volunteers providing assistance to the storm victims.

"Illinois is our home, and when one of our communities suffers a loss as tragically as the people of Washington did, we want to do all that we can to help them," said Rocky Wirtz, Chairman of the Chicago Blackhawks. "After seeing the devastation and speaking with Gov. Quinn, we realized just how much this donation can help those families get back on their feet again."

Blackhawks Charities pledges to support programs and institutions throughout Illinois that focus on health and wellness, education and housing, while striving to serve local citizens and impact the lives of youth in and around the city of Chicago. Since its inception in October 1993, Blackhawks Charities has granted over $11 million to local nonprofit organizations.

"Blackhawks Charities are here for the community – and our community spreads throughout all of Illinois's 102 counties," said Blackhawks President & CEO John McDonough.
