The U.S. State Department says North Korea has confirmed it is holding an American citizen, but the country has not given diplomats consular access so the individual's identity has not been confirmed.
However, it is believed the person is 85-year-old Korean War veteran Merrill Newman of California. His family claims he was detained at the end of a tourist trip in October.
A State Department spokeswoman said Friday Sweden was informed by Pyongyang that an American citizen was being detained. Sweden oversees the U.S.'s consular issues with North Korea because the U.S. and North Korea have no diplomatic relations with each other.
The Swedish Embassy is said to be asking for access to the detained citizen daily.
