The mayor of Washington, Illinois says over 1,000 homes in his community were damaged or destroyed by strong storms and a tornado on Sunday.
Mayor Gary Manier says that number includes homes that were completely destroyed and those that were only slightly damaged. The amount of people who were affected by the storms has not been released.
According to the National Weather Service, the tornado that hit Washington had winds that went over 190 miles per hour and cut a path over 46 miles long. One person was killed and dozens more injured.
A total of six people were killed in storms around Illinois on Sunday. Forecasters say at least 11 tornadoes hit the state that day.
