White House budget office reveals shutdown costs

The White House budget office has revealed the government lost 6.6 million work days during last month's partial shutdown.

The $2 billion in back pay to the 850,000 furloughed workers will be footed by taxpayers and the White House says the 16-day shutdown and uncertainty over the debt ceiling will slow economic growth this quarter.

Communities lost around $500 million in visitor spending from the closure of national parks and $4 billion in tax refunds were delayed by the IRS. Next year's filing season will also be delayed by up to two weeks.
