Half dozen women headed for Navy combat jobs

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WREX) — By the end of the year, a half dozen women are expected to break barriers and become the first females assigned to a Riverine combat company.

The battlefront Navy job is just now opening to females. The three units in the Riverine Delta Company are usually used to insert forces for raids or conduct rescue missions in shallow waters. The jobs are some of the first military positions to formally open to women.

The military has until January 1, 2016 to open as many battlefront jobs, like infantry, armor, and elite commando positions, to women as possible.
