Rockford Public Schools announces 2014 Hall of Fame class

The Rockford Public Schools athletic department has announced its second annual RPS Hall of Fame class to be honored at the Champions Ball on March 1, 2014.

The inductees are:

  • Ernie Kent - West High School Basketball: Kent graduated in 1973 and was named Parade Magazine All-American, Scholastic All-America, IHSA All-State, and received the America Legion Outstanding Achievement Award. He coached at the University of Oregon, leading the Ducks to the NCAA tournament five times. He will serve as the guest speaker at the ball.
  • Donna Cargill - East High School Track and Field: The 1992 graduate was seven-time state champion and won all three state sprinting events in 1991 and 1992. She also won the NIC-10 Female Matelote of the Year twice and was a star for the University of Alabama.
  • 1939 Rockford High School Boys' Basketball Team: The state champions finished the season 23-2. Since then, only 2 Rockford teams have won state titles in basketball (1955 and 1956 West teams). Keith Mulford, a member of the team, will be honored at the ball.
  • Jim Laude - Rockford High School basketball coach, East High basketball program founder: Laude coached the 1939 team and went on to start the basketball program at East the next year. He coached over the course of four decades before his retirement in 1954.
  • Brad Muzzarelli - East High manager for boys' football and basketball: "Muzzy" served as team manager for 38 years. He will be honored with the RPS Hall of Fame Community Service Award for his lifelong dedication to the E-Rabs. Muzzarelli won the NIC-10 Service Award in 2009 before dying of cancer later that year.

Tickets for the RPS Champions Ball are $75 a person or $525 for a table of eight. Proceeds benefit the Rockford Sports Coalition and RPS athletics. For more information or tickets, contact RPS Project Coordinator Emily Tropp at
