Nearly 30,000 Illinois parolees to be eligible for Medicaid

Next year, nearly 30,000 newly freed Illinois inmates will be eligible for Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

Illinois is one of 26 states that plans to allow Medicaid benefits to childless adults under the ACA. The Supreme Court made the expansion optional for states last year.

Prison officials say the access to physical and mental health care could help parolees succeed after their release from prison. The Department of Corrections is planning to help inmates connect with Medicaid prior to their release to help them make a smoother transition.

In the past, many parolees were not eligible.
