WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) -

As the holidays near, so does the need to help others make this season one to remember.

The Salvation Army of Winnebago County kicks off its 45th annual "Food for the Needy" drive at Rockford's Lewis Lemon Elementary School.

You can help the community raise food for Salvation Army food baskets by requesting a barrel to fill and get it sent to your house. Call (815) 997-6917.

"We know that the need is going to be greater this year so it will be upwards around 3,000 plus," says Salvation Army Winnebago County Coordinator Major Steve Merritt.  "So once again the food that comes in is all going to go back out into the community by the end of this year."

Starting Friday you can also ring the bells around town to help raise money.  To volunteer just log on to www.ringbells.org.
