ZION celebrates Grand Apartments to beat homelessness
A fundraiser held at Forest Hills Country Club focuses on the importance and accomplishments of the Grand Apartments over the past dozen years.
The apartments help homeless people transition into permanent living spaces in the Rockford area. ZION Development bought and rehabbed the apartments at Broadway and 8th Street back in 2001. Since then over 200 people have moved through the apartments and onto better living and employment situations.
"Living here, I'm seeing myself in a more positive light," says Kimberly Brown, who moved into The Grand (as residents call the apartments) four months ago after leaving an abusive relationship. "I'm getting 'me' back, like a flower blossoming," adds Brown, who is on the fundraiser's planning committee.
