DEKALB (WREX) -

Special game jerseys worn by the Northern Illinois University Huskies during their Mid-American Conference midweek match-up versus Ball State on Wednesday, Nov. 13, will be auctioned to benefit Active Heroes, a charity that supports veterans, active military and their families, NIU and Active Heroes announced Thursday.

During NIU's Heroes game, when the Huskies will honor past and present members of the military, as well as fire, police and other first responders, NIU will wear one-of-a-kind black jerseys produced by adidas especially for the Huskies, featuring stars on one shoulder and stripes on another.  The word "Heroes" will appear on the back of every jersey. The Huskies' helmet decals for the game will have stars and stripes inside the letters "NIU" within the logo.

Beginning Thursday, Nov. 1 through Thursday, Nov. 19 at 11:59 p.m. , fans can log on to the NIU Active Heroes Auction website at http://www.niu.activeheroes.org to bid on one or several of the 99 jerseys that will be made available and auctioned to the public.  The only way to obtain one of these special NIU Heroes game jerseys is through the NIU Active Heroes Jersey Auction.

Active Heroes is a 501c3 charity which helps veterans, active duty military, and their families by providing programs to combat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  For more information on the charity, please visit www.ActiveHeroes.org.

"Active Heroes is very excited and proud to partner with the NIU Huskies," said Troy Yocum, founder of Active Heroes. "Our team of veterans is looking forward to being on field for the game and to see the players wearing these amazing jerseys. I know it makes a difference in their lives to see the amount of support for their sacrifices! "

NIU Head Coach Rod Carey said he and the entire Huskie team are behind the effort.

"We're excited about the partnership with Active Heroes," Carey said. "That's what it's all about is a chance for us to assist and be involved with this great cause.  I want to see all of the jerseys sold, I want people to bid and bid often.  It's a perfect way to help a really worthwhile charity."

Specific information on the auction is available on the website at www.niu.activeheroes.org
