On-duty Pontiac officer and dog killed in crash

An on-duty officer with the Pontiac Police Department was killed in a crash late Wednesday, along with his police dog.

Twenty-nine-year-old Casey J. Kohlmeier's marked vehicle was struck by another vehicle on Interstate 55. Police say Kohlmeier was in the median turn-around just north of Route 23. Both Kohlmeier and his dog, Draco, were killed.

Kohlmeier served with the department for six years and was assigned to the Livingston County Pro-Active Unit. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

The crash is currently under investigation by Illinois State Police.
