Rockford middle schools are joining with the Rockford IceHogs to show students what a career in athletics looks like. The IceHogs are using more than just their athletes as resources. Students will learn the ins and outs of working for a professional sports team as accountants, marketing coordinators, communications specialists, athletic trainers, dieticians and the athletes themselves.
The IceHogs have worked with several RPS schools, but never in such a large-scale partnership with every RPS middle school. This is another way the IceHogs are giving back to Rockford Public Schools, our students and the community.
Students will complete a workbook over the next several weeks that is hockey-centric but covers multiple disciplines, such as nutrition, fitness, physical science, math, social science, geography and language arts. IceHogs personnel will be available for lessons.
A media kickoff event to formally announce and celebrate the partnership is 2:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25 in the library at West Middle School, 1900 N. Rockton Ave.
The program will culminate with a regular season hockey game on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at the BMO Harris Bank Center. Each RPS middle school student will attend – tickets are courtesy of the IceHogs, RPS will provide transportation, and students will eat lunch at the arena. A completed workbook will serve as each student's game-day ticket.
