We have another big slate of Friday Night Football games in week nine of the high school football season, including a key matchup between Harlem and Guilford. Both teams are 6-2 on the year, and fighting to secure at least a share of second place in the NIC-10. Guilford lost big against Hononegah last week, as Hononegah's two-headed running monster ran all over the Vikings defense. Harlem picked up a forfeit win over Jefferson, as the J-Hawks forfeited the remainder of their season. Delano Clanton led Guilford with 136 yards on the ground, but the team could not climb out of an early deficit and lost 42-14.
Hononegah is fighting to secure a share of second place in the conference. The Indians travel to Freeport to face the Pretzels to finish off the regular season. Hononegah's Alex Martin and Jake Wilson both ran for more than 200 yards on the ground for a second straight week, and Martin's gone for more than 200 yards in three straight games. The Pretzels lost a 54-33 shootout with Auburn last week. The game was tied at 27 in the second half, but Auburn pulled away for the win down the stretch, leaving the Pretzels at 1-7 on the season.
Elsewhere in the NIC-10, Belvidere tries to snap Boylan's 73 game conference winning streak. The Bucs have won two straight games, and need to beat Boylan in order to qualify for the playoffs. Boylan survived a scare from Belvidere North last week. The Titans had a 24-0 lead, but the Blue Thunder took the lead in the second half, and had the lead with a little more than three minutes to play before Boylan answered with a Zac Mathews touchdown run to give them their 73rd straight win in the conference.
The final game in the NIC-10 features Auburn and East playing for pride and bragging rights at Wyeth Stadium. Neither team will be in the playoffs this year. Auburn sits at 3-5, while East sports a 2-6 record. The teams are coming off opposite performances from last week though. Auburn picked up a 54-33 shootout win over Freeport, while the E-Rabs lost 42-7 to Belvidere.
Also, Belvidere North gets a win by forfeit over Jefferson.
Outside of the NIC-10, undefeated Winnebago hosts 7-1 Stillman Valley with a conference title on the line. In the Big Northern East, North Boone needs a win to become playoff eligible. In the NUIC Northwest, undefeated Eastland/Pearl City goes after an outright conference title against one-loss Forreston. And in the NUIC Upstate Aquin tries to deny River Ridge playoff eligibility, and seal up a spot of its own with a sixth win.
