We have another big slate of Friday Night Football games in week eight of the high school football season, including a key matchup between Hononegah and Guilford. Hononegah is coming off a big win over Harlem, in which both Alex Martin and Jake Wilson rushed for more than 200 yards. Martin went over the 1,000 yard mark for the season as Hononegah forced a tie for 3rd place with Harlem in the conference. Both teams trail Guilford by one game. The Vikings knocked off Auburn 21-20. They had a 21-14 lead, but Auburn scored a touchdown with 25 seconds left in the game and had a chance to tie with the extra point. But Guilford blocked the kick and recovered the late onside kick to claim its sixth win of the year and remain a game behind Boylan in the conference. Guilford's defense has been stout all year. The G-Vikes are the only NIC-10 team to allow fewer than 100 points this season.
Another key game in the NIC-10 features Belvidere against East. The Bucs need to win out in order to qualify for the playoffs. They started last week by snapping a four-game losing streak. The E-Rabs' loss last week eliminated them from playoff contention. Belvidere has beaten East 27 years in a row.
Elsewhere in the NIC-10, Belvidere North tries to snap Boylan's 72 game conference winning streak. Boylan hasn't played in awhile, as Jefferson forfeited its game against the Titans last week. So they'll be anxious to get back on the field tonight. A Boylan win will clinch at least a share of the NIC-10 title, which would be the eighth straight for the Titans. Belvidere North has already qualified for the playoffs, since Jefferson forfeited its final game of the season against them, marking five wins for the Blue Thunder.
The final game in the NIC-10 features Freeport against Auburn. Neither team will be in the playoffs this year, as Auburn was eliminated from contention with last week's heartbreaking loss to Guilford. That makes two straight weeks Auburn has lost by a 21-20 margin. The Knights also lost 20-19 earlier in the year against Belvidere North, and 16-7 to Boylan. Freeport running back Steve McShane needs just a little more than 200 yards to break the school rushing record, and he's only a junior. Also in the NIC-10, Harlem gets a win as Jefferson forfeits.
Outside of the NIC-10, undefeated Stillman Valley hosts 6-1 Rockford Lutheran in a key Big Northern West clash. Elsewhere in that conference, Winnebago travels to Byron as the Indians try to stay unbeaten. In the BNC East, first place is on the line as undefeated Harvard takes on conference unbeaten Genoa-Kingston. In the Northern Illinois Big 12 East, it's a battle of unbeatens as 7-0 Kaneland travels to 7-0 Sycamore.
