The runway is about to get a makeover at the Rochelle Municipal Airport.
Local leaders gathered there Thursday morning, inside a hangar to stay out of the rain, to make the announcement. The current 4226' x 75' runway will be extended to 5001' x 75', to allow the airport to handle more types of aircraft.
"The increased runway length will allow aircraft
from across the country to fly directly into Rochelle instead of neighboring
airports, which will allow more opportunities for businesses to be based in
Rochelle," Airport Manager Mark Delhotal explained.
Ninety percent of the project is funded by discretionary money distributed by the state and the rest is from the City of Rochelle.
A runway has been at that location since the mid-1940's. It was last extended in 1988.
